How to read a phone spec sheet without getting misled

Megapixels, charging watts, and IP ratings are the easiest numbers to over-read. Here is a calmer order to scan a specification table.

A specification sheet is a list of claims, not a review. Every number on it was chosen by the manufacturer, measured under conditions the manufacturer defined, and presented in a way the manufacturer thought was flattering. None of that makes the numbers false. It does mean the order you read them in matters.

Start with the parts you cannot change

Size and weight first. These are the specifications you will notice every single day and the only ones no software update or accessory can alter. A 229 g phone is heavy in a way that becomes apparent over an evening, and a 6.9-inch body does not fit some pockets or some hands. People routinely buy a phone on camera specifications and then spend two years mildly irritated by its size.

Then battery capacity and charging speed, which between them decide whether the phone constrains your day. Then storage, because on almost every modern flagship there is no memory card slot and the tier you buy is permanent.

Megapixels are a weak signal

Camera megapixel counts are the most over-read number on any specification sheet. A 200 MP sensor does not produce 200-megapixel photographs in normal use — it combines adjacent pixels into larger output pixels, a technique called binning, and delivers roughly 12 MP files with better light-gathering than a native 12 MP sensor. The benefit is real, but it is low-light performance and cropping headroom, not resolution.

What actually predicts photo quality is sensor size, lens quality, and processing, and only the first of those sometimes appears on a specification sheet. A useful proxy that does appear: look at whether the ultrawide and telephoto cameras are similar in resolution to the main one. A phone with a 50 MP main camera and a 2 MP macro has one good camera and a decoration. A phone with four 50 MP sensors will hold its quality when you switch focal lengths. That comparison tells you more than any single number.

Chipsets tell you a generation, not an experience

Chipset names — Snapdragon 8 Elite, A18 Pro, Tensor G4, Dimensity 9400 — tell you the generation and roughly the performance class. They do not tell you about thermal behaviour under sustained load, modem quality on your carrier, or software stability.

Two cautions. First, tiers within a brand matter: a Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 is a step below an 8 Elite despite the similar name, and manufacturers rely on that similarity. Second, chipset comparisons across operating systems are close to meaningless, which is also true of RAM — 8 GB on an iPhone does not behave like 8 GB on an Android phone, because the two systems manage memory differently.

Displays: read the maximum, expect the default

Refresh rate makes scrolling feel smoother and uses power. Resolution affects sharpness and uses power. Both figures on a specification sheet are maximums the panel supports, not necessarily the settings the phone ships in — several manufacturers ship QHD+ panels running at FHD+ by default to protect battery life.

LTPO is worth knowing as a term. An LTPO panel can vary its refresh rate dynamically, dropping low when the screen is static. It is the reason a 120 Hz phone can still last a day.

Charging watts are a peak, not an average

A 100 W charging figure is a peak the manufacturer advertises with a compatible charger and cable under their test conditions. The phone does not sit at 100 W from empty to full — the rate tapers as the battery fills, to manage heat.

Charging speed only means something next to battery capacity. Filling 6000 mAh at 100 W and filling 4700 mAh at 27 W are very different daily experiences. And in many regions no charger is included, so the wattage on the sheet is what the phone supports, not what arrives in the box.

IP ratings are laboratory results

IP68 is stronger against dust and immersion than IP48, and the two digits mean different things — the first is dust, the second is water. None of them mean you should swim with the phone, none of them cover salt water, and liquid damage is commonly excluded from warranty regardless of the rating.

What the sheet cannot tell you

When two phones look equal on a table, the difference is usually software update policy, camera processing, repair cost and parts availability, carrier band support, and how the phone feels in your hand. Update commitments in particular are a genuine specification that almost never appears in a hardware table, and the gap between manufacturers is measured in years.

A scanning order to actually use

If you want the whole thing as a sequence: size and weight, then battery capacity together with charging speed, then storage tier, then the camera row read across all focal lengths rather than at the main sensor, then the ingress rating, and only then the chipset and RAM. Read the display row for panel type and LTPO rather than for the resolution number.

That order puts the specifications that shape your day at the top and the ones that fill marketing tables at the bottom. It is close to the reverse of how most manufacturers present their own phones, which is the point.

One habit worth building

When a number looks impressive, ask what it is measured against. 200 MP against what sensor size. 100 W against what battery capacity. 16 GB of RAM against what operating system. IP68 against whose definition of immersion depth.

Almost every misleading specification on a phone page is a real number presented without its denominator. Once you are in the habit of asking for the denominator, most of them stop being misleading.

We do not pretend a table replaces any of that. We do give you a clean, consistent table so that the hardware side is not a mystery, and we tell you when a number is less meaningful than it looks.
