Battery health: what wears a phone battery out

Capacity fades with heat and cycles, not with the myths. What actually degrades a battery, what does nothing, and what to do about it.

Every lithium-ion battery loses capacity over its life. A phone that comfortably lasted a day when new will not do so after three years, and no charging habit prevents that entirely. Some habits meaningfully slow it, and a great deal of widely repeated advice does nothing at all.

What a charge cycle is

A cycle is one full battery's worth of energy, not one plugging-in. Charging from 50 percent to 100 percent twice is one cycle. Manufacturers rate batteries to retain roughly 80 percent of original capacity after a specified number of cycles, commonly several hundred to a thousand depending on the phone.

This is why 'do not charge too often' is bad advice. Topping up from 70 percent costs a third of a cycle whether you do it now or later. What you want to minimise is total energy through the cell and the conditions under which it passes.

Heat is the main culprit

Temperature does more damage than anything else. A battery held hot degrades faster, and the damage is cumulative and permanent.

The practical sources of heat are a phone left on a car dashboard in sun, gaming or recording video for long stretches, fast charging in an already-warm room, and charging under a pillow or a thick case. A phone that is uncomfortably warm to hold is losing capacity faster than one that is not.

This is the honest caveat on fast charging. A phone charged at 100 W every day is not treated as gently as one charged at 27 W. Manufacturers offset it with larger cells and better thermal management, and most people replace phones before it decides anything — but it is a trade, not a free feature.

The 20 to 80 rule, and how much it is worth

Lithium cells are least stressed in the middle of their range. Sitting at 100 percent, particularly while warm, ages a battery faster than sitting at 60 percent, and deep discharges to near zero are also hard on it.

Staying roughly between 20 and 80 percent genuinely extends usable life. Whether it is worth doing depends on whether you would rather have a phone that lasts longer per charge now, or one that holds more of its capacity in three years.

Most phones now offer optimised charging, which learns your schedule and holds at 80 percent overnight before finishing shortly before you wake. If you charge overnight, turning that on is the single highest-value thing in this article, and it costs you nothing. Several manufacturers also offer a hard cap at 80 or 85 percent for people willing to trade daily range for longevity.

Things that do not matter

You do not need to fully discharge a phone periodically to recalibrate it. That advice comes from nickel-cadmium batteries and has been wrong for lithium for decades — deep discharges actively harm them.

Leaving a phone plugged in after it reaches 100 percent does not overcharge it; the charging circuit stops. The relevant harm is the cell sitting at full charge while warm, which is what optimised charging addresses.

Third-party chargers do not damage phones as long as they are from a reputable manufacturer and support the right protocols. Genuinely cheap unbranded chargers are a safety issue rather than a battery-longevity one, and that is a good enough reason to avoid them.

Closing background apps does not preserve battery health, and on Android it often increases power use by forcing apps to cold-start repeatedly.

Checking your battery's condition

iOS reports maximum capacity as a percentage of original in the battery settings. Android's reporting varies by manufacturer; some expose a battery health figure, others do not, and third-party applications estimate it with mixed accuracy.

Below roughly 80 percent of original capacity, most people notice. That is the point at which a replacement is worth pricing — an official battery replacement is usually far cheaper than a new phone and can add years to a device that is otherwise fine.

What this means when buying

Battery capacity on a specification sheet is the figure for a new phone. A 5000 mAh battery after three years behaves like a considerably smaller one, which is worth factoring in if you keep phones a long time: a larger battery is not just more endurance today, it is more remaining endurance later.

It matters more when buying used. A two-year-old phone has a two-year-old battery, and the listing will not mention it. Ask for the battery health figure if the platform reports one, and price a replacement into what you are willing to pay if it does not.

Replacement is harder than it used to be

Batteries in modern phones are held in with adhesive behind a glued display or back panel, so replacement is a workshop job rather than something you do at a kitchen table. It is also the repair most likely to compromise a water-resistance rating, because the seals have to be cut and re-applied.

Right-to-repair legislation in several regions has begun to push manufacturers toward selling parts and publishing procedures, and some now offer official self-repair programmes. Availability varies enormously by country, and an official service centre remains the option most likely to restore the seals properly.

The short version

Turn on optimised charging if you charge overnight. Keep the phone out of direct sun and off hot surfaces, and take the case off if it gets hot while fast charging. Do not bother with full discharges, do not worry about leaving it plugged in, and do not close background apps for battery reasons.

Then stop thinking about it. Battery wear is real and gradual, and beyond those few habits there is very little worth doing differently.
