5G and 4G on a spec sheet: what the radio line actually means
GSM, HSPA, LTE, and 5G compressed into one line looks technical and says less than you would think. Here is what a buyer should take from it.
When we print “GSM / HSPA / LTE / 5G” on a specification sheet, we are summarising that the phone speaks the common cellular generations used worldwide. It is a compatibility statement, not a speed guarantee, and it is one of the least informative rows on the table for reasons worth understanding.
What the generations are
GSM is the second-generation standard, now largely switched off in many countries but still listed for backward compatibility. HSPA is the 3G family, also being retired worldwide. LTE is 4G. 5G is the current generation. A modern phone supports all of them, which is why the row looks the same on nearly every page in our catalog.
The row tells you a phone is not artificially limited to an old standard. Beyond that, on a current flagship, it distinguishes almost nothing.
Bands are what actually matter
Each generation is divided into frequency bands, and a phone only works on the bands its modem and antennas support. Carriers own different bands in different countries. This is where a phone that says 5G on the box ends up never showing 5G on your network.
The problem is concentrated in a few situations. Imported phones are the main one: a Xiaomi or Oppo model bought in Asia can be missing the mid-band 5G frequencies a European or North American carrier depends on. Manufacturers also sell regional variants of the same marketing name with different modems — the phone is called the same thing, the box looks the same, and the band list is different.
We do not yet publish a full band table for every model. That is a gap we are honest about rather than papering over with a partial list. If you are importing, or if you live somewhere with unusual band allocations, the model number is the only reliable identifier — check it against your carrier's published band list before buying.
5G is not automatically faster than 4G
5G divides into two broad flavours. Low- and mid-band 5G covers wide areas and delivers moderately better speeds and latency than good LTE. Millimetre-wave 5G delivers extremely high speeds over very short distances with poor building penetration, and in most countries it exists in a handful of stadiums and city blocks.
In practice, well-provisioned LTE frequently outperforms congested low-band 5G. The indicator on your status bar tells you which standard you are connected to, not how fast it is. Real speed depends on your carrier's spectrum holdings, how many people share the tower, your distance from it, and what your plan permits — many plans throttle after a data threshold, which makes the radio generation irrelevant.
5G costs battery
5G modems generally use more power than LTE, and a phone at the edge of 5G coverage — hunting for a signal and repeatedly falling back — can drain noticeably faster than the same phone locked to LTE. If you have weak 5G where you live and your battery life is disappointing, forcing LTE in network settings is a genuine fix worth trying before you blame the battery.
Wi-Fi is a separate row
Wi-Fi generations — Wi-Fi 6, 6E, 7 — are unrelated to cellular. A phone can have excellent Wi-Fi 7 and mediocre 5G, or the reverse. Read both lines.
Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 add the 6 GHz band, which is faster and much less congested, but only if your router supports it too. Buying a Wi-Fi 7 phone to use with a Wi-Fi 5 router gets you Wi-Fi 5.
eSIM and dual SIM
The SIM row is often more consequential than the network row. Some phones take two physical SIMs, some take one physical plus an eSIM, and some — all US iPhones since the iPhone 14 — have no physical tray at all. eSIM support varies by carrier and by country, and moving an eSIM between phones is not always as simple as swapping a card.
If you travel and rely on local SIMs, or if you run separate work and personal numbers, read that row carefully. It differs between regional variants of the same model more often than most buyers expect.
The short version
VoLTE, VoWiFi, and the features that silently do not work
Beyond raw bands, carriers require phones to be certified for voice services. Voice over LTE and voice over Wi-Fi are the two that matter, and on networks that have switched off their old 2G and 3G voice paths, a phone without VoLTE certification for that carrier may get data and no calls at all.
This is the most common unpleasant surprise with imported phones, and it is invisible on every specification sheet because it is a certification status rather than a hardware capability. The same handset model can be certified on a carrier in one country and not in another. Carriers publish supported-device lists; that list is the authority, not the box.
Practical advice
If you are buying locally from an official channel, none of this needs your attention — the phone is sold there because it works there. If you are importing, buying second-hand from another region, or moving to a new country with a phone you already own, look up your exact model number on your carrier's supported-device list before committing. It takes a few minutes and it is the only check that reliably catches these problems.
The network row confirms a phone is modern. Everything that determines whether it works well on your network lives in the band list, which is model-number specific and which your carrier publishes. When in doubt, check there rather than on any specification sheet, including ours.
